Our Presentation
Monday - What we did: Today we planned our action. We didn’t just want to investigate, we wanted to make a difference around the school. Every Friday, from now on, we would go around from the 4th, 5th and 6th floor picking up the recycling that the teachers have collected throughout the week. We formed groups using Savannah’s advisory, Nathan, Leo and me. These were the groups listed and what floor and classrooms they will collect paper from: These groups will be collecting the recyled paper from now on till the end of the school year. It does seam promising, but it is quite a difficult thing to do, some people will be sick, some people will forget, some wont show up, etc. Things could go wrong easily and people could quit before we know it. This is a problem we discussed, as going on with this untill the end of the school year is a difficult promise to keep. But we worked then out, as Savannah’s advisory already did recycling and her advisory will HAVE to go with because of that. But even problems we didn’t expect like somebody being sick, are easy to be solved as we just add them on to another group. While Savvy was working on the chart, and I was tweaking it as we went along, Leonardo was investigating research we could possibly use to put in our keynote that we will present on Monday. He also couldn’t let go of the logo problem from Friday... so that was worked on quite a bit. As Savvy complained working on that for too long is a waiste of time, we moved on to planning what we will do tomorrow as time ran out quickly, and we only have 4 sessions left!!! What went right:
We all know now, that we have to focus and work really hard. Everybody in our group understands that we only have 4 sessions left, so it is really important we finish and stay focused, like we are. What went wrong: Someone in our group does not understand what we are doing, and is having trouble knowing what to do and to listen. We offer to help and this is what we are working on, but it is holding us back, and we just need to get our work done. -astrid Thursday- Even though we are getting work done, it still feels a little bit incomplete. By this stage in our investigation, we should at least be finished with our general questions (why do we need to recycle paper? how and who does it effect? what other energy/fuel does it waste? how does recycling work? where does it go?) So we decided to work on that. But for Monday, we need to work on planning a meeting with Mr. Dare to : Inevstigate how much we recycle, how much we don't, how the grade 3s are helping, how much we should recycle, what we can do around the school, how much it costs, how to raise awarenes, how to take action) Even though that is something that needs to get done ASAP, we worked on personalizing our weebly page. Leonardo and I made a picture to put on out page, we struggled mostly with technical diffuclties and don't think it will work soon, that waisted too much time on Friday, I think. So we decided to leave that for Monday because we had to get other work done. this is our picture: it is at the top of the page as a logo (quite small though) What else did we do?
We worked on the receipt for recycling paper. Leo was calculating how much paper comes into school. 800,000 sheets of paper come in every year on average. We discussed that this was a problem, and realized that next session we had to take action because most of this paper isn’t recycled. But how much exactly is recycled? As time ran out quickly, and we only have 5 sessions left, we realized we had to react fast. -astrid Even though we only had 3 sessions (including Thursday) Thursday was our best, we worked together and stayed together the whole time. We imporved behavior and work, as we finished all reflections, data job charts and investigation, we worked so well that I think tomorrow (Friday) We we will do even better. Even though we improve a little every time, we still lack investigation and research. Hopefully we will get some done next time. This is the chart Leo and Savannah worked on representing the jobs we have in order to be prepared for our life cycle of recycling paper: - Astrid Smits
Wednesday - As we finished the first side of the sheet on tuesday, it was time to complete our second part, the use of our information and synthesis. How would we record the information that we find?
when we completed what we could, we realized that if we would do a performance or presentation, it would be to raise awareness, and to present to Mr. Musco so that we could ask some of the questions we had, and to help us investigate on our school recycling.
What went wrong? most of our group members got off topic quite a lot, this is why we only completed one side of the sheet, we could have done more. What went right? We got SOMETHING done and it gave us less stress on Thursday, when we needed to have everything done. So our big six planning sheeet was already finished, and for us not to worry about. - Astrid Smits Tuesday - Tuesday was our first session, that was when we were just introduced to this project. Out project was to investigate on paper recycling. We then got a sheet organized using the big six method. this is a form of planning. The first step was to gather information we needed in order to recycle paper and find out how much we recycle in school. This was our list of what we needed to investigate:
When we finished our list, we listed the best sources to find the information we needed. (list above) we though teachers, students and other clues around the school (recycling bins, etc.) would be helpful for our investigation, but meetings with the principal would investigate how much we recycle, and how much it costs in the school. Outside the school, we would use websites (our grade website, other school websites) and books on paper recycling. But we would access our sources through the school library, sources provided by our teachers, internet and around the school. This is what we completed today: the front sheet - Astrid Smits
